WHY DO WE EDIT?

There are many reason's why we edit films. The main reason is that if we didn't do this, every film that we would watch would be in real time, and this would take a very long time watch. If we were to watch film's in real time then there would be hours of shots in the film which would have no use to the actual plot, therefore making the film very confusing and extremely boring. No successful film has ever really been done solely in real time, there is always some sort of editing done, again because the audience would purely become too bored without any cutting and editing from the director. The editing of a film also adds a pace, if for example a film was a horror, more than likely the film might be edited so that it build suspense and then to scare the audience by being edited to a very fast pace. By having the ability to edit shots, it gives the director much more creative ability and tells their stories in much more interesting ways. It allows a cross and jump through time and change scenes in less than seconds, it can establish scenes and scenarios which could not be done without the use of editing.

So overall, we edit to create a piece of film which is not only exciting but interesting to an audience, something which will engage a person and create an emotional response.
